Do's & Dont's

Do's

  • Do use dedicated tile cleaners appropriate for your tile
  • Do use clean materials (Cloths, Sponges, Wipes)
  • Do use fresh water
  • Do clean your tiles regularly
  • If tiles are glossy, ensure all water residue is removed from the tile, as leaving it on the face of the tile will leave water spots
  • Do clean the grout regularly as this will stop any staining
  • Do test any new products in a small patch first, before applying to all of the affected area. For intensive treatments, test on a spare tile or discreet area first.
  • Do make sure that any furniture is placed on plastic feet/removed from the tile in the wet conditions, to avoid rust spots.

Dont's

  • Don’t use harsh chemicals (such as bleach, Flash)
  • Don’t use any harsh compounds for scratches
  • Don’t use any acid washes for any residues left on the tiles as they could stain/mark the tiles or could even damage any chrome accessories in the room.
  • Don’t apply sealer on top of sealer on top of sealer
  • Don't use 'PINK STUFF' / 'SCRUB DADDYS' Products
  • Don’t let anything sit on the surface of the tiles such as;
    • Harsh chemicals / cleaners
    • Heavy pigmented items (red wine / curry sauce etc)
    • General day to day dirt, including mud, as over time it can get ingrained into the tile

How to clean and maintain your tiles

A simple guide to help you remove various unwanted dirt, marks and residue without damaging the surface of your tiles. This guide is an overview which applies to many of our Lithofin cleaning products. To see specifics on grout removal, daily cleaning, stains and sealing see four simple guides below.

Step: 1

Make solution

Mix the solution as per the ratio on the packaging. We have 4 guides below with detailed ratios for each.

Step: 2

Prepare and apply

In some cases it may be best to wet down the tiles with clean water. Then, apply the diluted solution with a mop/white pad or soft bristled scrubbing brush.

Step: 3

Soak

Allow the product to sit for a few minutes before removing from the face of the tile. In some cases, you made need to wait up to 15 minutes.

Step: 4

Rinse and wipe

Rinse with clean water and wipe down. Ensure that the tiles are fully dry and all remaining product and water has been removed from the tile. If water spots have occurred, use a clean, dry cloth to buff the face of the tile.

Below you will find some helpful guides from Lithofin. To find out more please visit their video gallery and check out the various videos they have on cleaning, and protecting your tiles.

Step-by-step guide: Removing grout residue from tiles

If grout has been left on the face of the tile for too long, it will create a “film” or “haze” on the tile which goes away when water is applied and will re appear once it dries. This is more than likely a cement “film/haze”. The way to combat this and get rid of it once and for all is to use Lithofin Cement Residue Remover. (Please note not suitable for some natural stones).

  1. Dilute the Cement Residue Remover in a clean bucket using clean water. (Dilution Ratio 1:4)
  2. Wet down the tiles with clean water then apply the diluted Cement Residue Remover with a clean mop or white pad. Alternatively use a soft bristled scrubbing brush.
  3. Go over the affected area a few times to allow the product to get full coverage.
  4. Leave to work and soak into the grout residue for about 10 minutes. Then re-agitate the solution.
  5. Rinse down with clean water and wipe down with a clean and dry cloth. If the problem still occurs, you can up the ratio to 1:15. Always test the product in the corner of the room to ensure that no damage to the face of the tile occurs.

Step-by-step Guide: Tile maintenance cleaning

General day to day cleaning of tiles is essential when it comes to keeping them looking clean and new. Daily stains, muck and general dirt can affect the aesthetic of the face of the tile if left long enough, which is why it’s essential to conduct maintenance cleans. Lithofin Easy Care is the product for the job.

  1. Fill a clean bucket with lukewarm water and add a small amount of Lithofin Easy Care to the water. (roughly 20ml per 10 litres of water) If the surface is especially dirty, add more product to the same amount of water.
  2. Apply the product to the surface of the tile with a clean mop/wipe or soft bristled brush.
  3. Allow the product to work for 10 minutes before rinsing with clean water.
  4. Buff any dry spots with a clean mop or cloth.

Lithofin Easy Care can be added to floor cleaning machines if necessary. Easy Care is only a maintenance cleaner and will not remove any deep stains. For tougher stains, we recommend either Lithofin Wexa / Lithofin MN Power Clean depending on the tile type.

Step- by-step guide: Removing stains & marks from tiles

Sometimes tiles get marked or stained with a lot of different types of dirt or other substances. Removing them can be tricky, but Lithofin have a select range of products available to aid in cleaning and removing stains. Two of the most common and most effective products a Lithofin Wexa and Lithofin Power Clean.

Note: Wexa can be used on most natural stones excluding Sandstone. MN Power Clean can be used for all natural and artificial stone including porcelain. Avoid splashing on sensitive areas such as wood / metal / painted surfaces when using both products.

  1. For Both Wexa and Power Clean / Wax Off, a dilution ratio of 1:10 is required.
  2. Fill a clean bucket with clean water and add the product into the bucket for dilution.
  3. Apply the product to the surface of the tile and agitate with a soft bristled brush.
  4. Leave to work for 10 – 15 minutes depending on the stain / dirt, but do not allow to dry.
  5. Brush again before rinsing with clean water.
  6. If the stain still remains when using Power Clean, you can cut the ratio to 1:5. However, do not do this for WEXA - instead just repeat the process with 1:10 solution.

Step-by-step guide: Sealing tiles

Sometimes tiles arrive from the factory unsealed and are porous - mainly natural stone but some porcelain can also be affected by this. Lithofin have a wide range of sealers available and they are all applied in the same way as each other.

  1. The surface of the tile must be clean and free from any previous sealers / dirt and completely dry. A clean sponge / cloth / brush must be used when applying the sealer. Apply the sealer in the corner of the room to make sure that it does not react with the tiles.
  2. If the sealer does not react with the tiles, apply the sealer to the tiles until they are wet in appearance and allow to work for 15 minutes.
  3. Make sure that all puddles of the sealer are evenly distributed and are not puddling/drying in one spot. If the product is still on the surface of the tile after 30 minutes, wipe away the excess with a dry cloth and ensure that the tiles are fully dry

Lithofin’s various sealers are specifically made for different stone types:

Cleaning and maintaining your tiles - FAQ's
  • What cleaning products can I use on my outdoor porcelain tiles?
Lithofin KF Intensive Cleaner is suitable for outdoor external tiles. You can learn more about cleaning outdoor tiles on Lithofins video gallery page
  • What is Lithofin grout cleaner?
Grout cleaner is an alkaline based cleaner dedicated to refreshing the look of grout and removing all dirt/stains.
  • What is Lithofin Ceramic Clean?
Lithofin Ceramic Clean is used for basic ceramic tiles, but is very good for porcelain too. It refreshes the surface of the tile helping it look 'like new'.
  • How to keep tiles shiny?
Regular cleaning and maintenance of tiles will keep them looking shiny and new. Lithofin Easy Care Cleaner is a great economical solution to improve a tile's appearance. If you wish to make natural stone tiles look shiny, glossy sealers such as Lithofin MN Slate Seal will have the desired effect.
  • How to keep tiles clean?
The best way to keep tiles clean is to understand what cleaner works best depending on what type of tile it is. Porcelain and ceramic tiles will require a different cleaner to natural stone. Lithofin KF Ceramic Clean is a high-yielding concentrate of active acids and high-quality cleaning compounds suitable for ceramic, porcelain and quarry tiles. For natural stone, Lithofin MN Power Clean is recommended as it is a mildly alkaline cleaner containing a balanced mixture of cleaning components.
  • How to keep tiles clean in shower?
The best way to keep mildew and grime at bay is to frequently clean the tiles in your shower. As grout is commonly light-coloured, it can be easy to spot when it is becoming dirty. Lithofin KF Ceramic Clean ensures that surfaces will shine and is ideal for the every-day maintenance of bathrooms and showers. Use Lithofin KF Grout Cleaner to effectively restore the original colour and appearance of grout lines.
  • How to protect tiles?
Different tile materials require dedicated sealing products to effectively protect the tile surface from wear. Standard ceramic and glazed porcelain tiles do not usually require sealing. Unglazed porcelain tiles are porous and therefore require sealing using a product such as Lithofin KF Protective Impregnator. Natural stone tiles always require sealing as they are extremely porous and different sealers are available to protect this type of tile. Lithofin MN Stainstop will seal the tiles and have no impact on their appearance, whereas Lithofin MS Slate Seal will create a glossy finish on the surface of slate and sandstone.
  • How to keep tiles looking new?
Although the majority of ceramic and porcelain tiles are non-porous, using a tile sealant creates a protective surface layer that makes them less resistant to substances like water, oil and grease. Lithofin KF Protective Impregnator can be used on porcelain whereas Lithofin KF Stainstop is recommended for ceramic. Lithofin Multiseal is ideal for natural stone due to its extremely porous nature.
  • How to protect tiles from scratches?
Floor tiles are the most likely to be scratched. Clean your floor every week so that any abrasive materials will not scratch the surface. Lithofin Easy Care Cleaner is suitable for regular maintenance. Protecting the grout by sealing it will ensure that no pieces of debris can gather in the crevices which could ultimately be scratched across the tile. Lithofin KF Grout Protector is ideal for protection, especially in kitchens and sanitary areas.
  • How to protect tiles from stains?
Ceramic and porcelain tiles can still stain despite being very hard wearing. In order to maximise protection from stains you should clean the tiles thoroughly using Lithofin Easy Care Cleaner. After about 10 minutes, apply a sealer. Lithofin KF Protective Impregnator works great for all porcelain tiles whereas Lithofin KF Stainstop will work for ceramic and quarry tiles. If you want to protect natural stone tiles, then Lithofin MN Slate Seal is recommended.
  • How to protect tiles from water?
Regular care and maintenance of your tiles is the best way to protect them from water damage. Airing out rooms that your tiles are located in is a good way to keep them dry, especially if they are in a bathroom. Clean up any spills of leaks as soon as they happen to reduce the risk of damage. Using a sealer on any grout lines or the tile itself will create a protective layer, reducing the risk of water seeping in. Lithofin KF Stainstop can be used on ceramic or quarry tiles, Lithofin KF Protective Impregnator will be suitable for porcelain tiles, and Lithofin KF Grout Protector will help protect porous grout form absorbing any water.
  • How to protect tile grout?
In order to protect tile grout from damage and discolouration, it is recommended that you seal it as soon as it is installed, then again after every six to twelve months. This will ensure that it is kept looking brand new. Lithofin KF Grout Protector is perfect for protecting absorbent and porous cement-based grout.
  • How to protect unglazed tiles?
Naturally, unglazed tiles have a lower porosity than glazed tiles meaning they are more susceptible to liquid-based staining or damage. It is important to use a sealer when looking to protect unglazed porcelain or ceramic tiles. Firstly, carry out a deep clean using Lithofin Easy Care Cleaner. Next, seal the tile using either Lithofin KF Protective Impregnator for porcelain, or Lithofin KF Stainstop for ceramic and quarry. Natural stone can be sealed using Lithofin MN Stainstop.
  • How to clean grout?
Grout can be difficult to clean due to its porous properties as well as the fact that it lies deeper than the surface of the tiles. Sealing the grout using Lithofin KF Grout Protector can help to protect it, however, it can be cleaned using Lithofin KF Grout Cleaner.
  • How to clean and maintain porcelain tiles?
Porcelain tiles are a lot more resilient and durable than ceramic tiles meaning they are easier to maintain. Due to their low absorbency, porcelain tiles do not usually require sealing unless they are polished. This is because the polishing process gives them a slight degree of micro porosity. In this case, Lithofin KF Protective Impregnator can be used. In order to clean porcelain tiles, we recommend using Lithofin KF Intensive Cleaner.
  • How to clean and maintain ceramic tiles?
Ceramic is the most popular type of tile and glazed ceramics possess a specific coating that protects the tile. Ceramic floor tiles can be susceptible to scratches, therefore, regular sweeping is recommended to remove any dirt or grit from damaging the tile although we would always recommend using porcelain tiles on floors. This is because they are more durable and a hard-wearing surface for footfall areas. For ceramic wall tiles, use Lithofin KF Ceramic Clean for every-day maintenance and cleaning.
  • Can you clean tiles with vinegar?
It is not recommended that you use vinegar to clean tiles as this can be abrasive and damaging. The best way to ensure a clean finish on your tiles is to use Lithofin Easy Care Cleaner.
  • Can you clean tiles with bleach?
It is not recommended that you use bleach to clean tiles as this can be abrasive and damaging. The best way to preserve and ensure a clean finish is to use Lithofin Easy Care Cleaner.
  • Can tiles be regrouted?
Regrouting tiles can be risky as it can cause damage, therefore, you should only regrout tiles if absolutely necessary. Regrouting should only be required if the grout begins to crumble and the tiles become loose. The old grout should be removed from the tile joint with either a grout rake or multi tool to a depth of 2-3mm and then cleaned to remove contaminants and dust. This will leave space for the new flexible grout to be successfully installed into the joint.
  • When to clean tiles after grouting?
Grout needs time to settle once it has been laid. It usually takes about 24-72 hours to dry. Once the grout has fully set it will be safe to clean the tiles. Lithofin Easy Care Cleaner is a great cleaning agent for the regular maintenance and upkeep of tiles. Sometimes after grouting, a little bit of residue can be left on the tiles. In this case, Lithofin KF Cement Residue Remover can be used to lift the residue from the tiles whilst also giving them a clean look.
  • When to clean tiles?
After initial installation, leave tiles and grout to set for around 24-72 hours before undertaking any cleaning. After that it is up to you how often you clean your tiles. Floor tiles generally will require more cleaning than wall tiles as it is a high-traffic area. To keep floor tiles looking shiny and new it is recommended that you clean them every 1-2 weeks. Use Lithofin KF Intensive Cleaner for porcelain tiles and Lithofin KF Ceramic Clean for ceramic and quarry tiles. Wall tiles in a bathroom or shower should be cleaned every week to keep mould and mildew at bay. For best results, use Lithofin KF Mildew Away and Lithofin KF Grout Cleaner.
  • What will clean tile grout?
Grout is harder to clean than tiles due to its porous nature which leaves it prone to stains. Lithofin KF Grout Cleaner effectively restores the original colour and appearance of grout lines.
  • What grout is easiest to clean?
Whilst grout maintenance is necessary, darker colours tend to cover dirty marks better making it easier to clean. If darker grout is going to clash with your project, you can always opt for a grey or stone colour grout but this will get dirtier quicker.
  • What tiles need sealing?
Ceramic and porcelain tiles do not normally require sealing, however, we offer a range of polished porcelain tiles where the polishing process produces microscopic holes. In this case, the manufacturer recommends you seal the tiles. This can be done with Lithofin KF Protective Impregnator. Natural stone tiles, such as limestone, sandstone and slate, will need to be sealed on a regular basis using Lithofin MN Stainstop. Lithofin sealing products will typically last up to a year before reapplication is needed. Check the manufacturer's recommendations for precise guidance.
