Converting an ordinary bathroom into a contemporary, stylish wet room can totally transform your bathing experience into one that is both luxurious and practical. Wet rooms are completely waterproof shower rooms that can be installed in virtually any home with the advantage of potentially increasing the value of your property.

A wet room is a fantastic way of opening up space in a small bathroom by removing the need for a shower cubicle and it also serves as an ideal solution for people with mobility problems who may find accessing a bath or shower tray difficult. You’ll generally find a wet room easier to maintain than a traditional bathroom as there is no shower cubicle to clean and, if you opt for a wall-hung basin and toilet, keeping the room clean is even easier.

Read on to discover what you need to know when it comes to choosing that all important aspect – your tiles!

Your wet room experience

Tiling is one of the most important design features of a wet room and before you begin, it’s a good idea to decide what kind of look you are trying to achieve. Whether it’s spa-like contemporary, playful and colourful or classic chic, it’s all down to your personal choice. To make sure the room is entirely waterproof, it’s recommended to tile the full room, from floor to ceiling.

Choosing your wet room floor tiles

Whilst ceramic tiles are suitable for wet room walls, we would only recommend using porcelain on a wet room floor. Porcelain tiles are denser than ceramic and therefore less porous, harder and more durable long term.

Another important factor when choosing your wet room floor tiles is slip resistance. Choosing porcelain tiles with an anti-slip surface will provide extra grip underfoot, reducing the risk of slipping when the floor is wet and providing a safer bathing environment.

The Kursaal collection also features a unique ‘soft grip’ surface which feels softer underfoot than the average anti slip tile.

When using large format anti slip tiles in a wet room shower area, your tiler will need to cut them in an envelope fashion to suit the slope of the shower floor.

Consider using mosaic tiles

Mosaics are a popular choice for wet room floors for two main reasons. 1) With mosaic tiles, it is generally easier to produce a good sloping finish that drains away water. The mesh backing makes it easier for the mosaic to be manoeuvred into place to adjust to the sloping of the floor. 2) They add an extra level of slip resistance due to their numerous grout lines, which act as a gulley and help the water disperse.

If you appreciate design and like the idea of a luxurious and unique wet room, mosaic tiles are an ideal option. They are also a great asset to smaller wet rooms, helping to brighten up a small space. We have a wide variety of mosaic tiles suitable for wet room floors including our GEMINI Linear mosaics. Using the coordinating plain tiles on walls gives a wonderful overall feeling of relaxation and tranquillity.

Maintaining your wet room

Wet rooms need to be cared for in the same way that any wet hygiene environment does. We would always recommend using an anti-mould grout and to help maintain the grout colour, it’s advisable to use a grout sealer. Combat any unsightly iron deposits using a mould spray.

Have you considered…

Allocating a dedicated space in your shower area for storing showering essentials like shampoo is a great idea and niche shelving is ideal for this. Removing the need for chrome racks which may rust over time, shower niches provide a practical and space saving solution. If you have used a mosaic tile on your wet room floor, consider using the mosaic inside any wall niches and add lighting for added effect.

Underfloor heating is a necessary luxury in a wet room, making it a pleasant temperature to walk on and helping to quickly dry a wet floor.
